Brazilian Delegation Visit Focuses on Medical Advances, Biomaterials Evolution

A Brazilian delegation of academics and industry executives — on a mission to learn about cutting-edge advances in medicine and biomaterials evolution — visited the Wyss Institute February 27 to meet with leading researchers and hear about the Institute’s unique model. The delegation included Fernando Costa, President of the Universidade Estadual de Campinas (UNICAMP), and Prof. Ronaldo Pilli, UNICAMP’s research dean. A public university, UNICAMP is recognized as one of Brazil’s most prolific research centers. Also present were Bernardo Gradin and Alan Hiltner, President and Executive Vice President respectively of GraalBio Investimentos S.A., a biofuels and biochemicals company based in Sao Paulo.

After receiving an overview of the Institute’s mission, model for technology translation, and lead technologies from Founding Director Don Ingber, the delegates toured our state-of-the-art labs to meet researchers involved in several different technology platforms. They were briefed on a number of Wyss technologies, including wrist orthotics for children with cerebral palsy, our DNA nanorobot for therapeutic applications, the Wyss RAPID sepsis diagnostic device, and our next-generation DNA sequencing technology.
