Biomimetic Microsystems for Modeling Influenza Infection

The Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering at Harvard University invites applications for a postdoctoral fellow position in the Biomimetic Microsystems platform. The mission of the Wyss Institute is to discover the engineering principles that Nature uses to build living things; to pursue the high-risk research that is fundamental to advance this effort; and to harness these insights to create biologically-inspired materials and devices to advance human health and improve the environment – thereby revolutionizing clinical medicine and creating a more sustainable world.

We seek outstanding postdoctoral applicants with expertise and knowledge of Influenza and/or lung biology to join an interdisciplinary team of biologists and engineers for the development of novel in vitro human “organ-on-chip” microsystems technologies to study and model influenza infection and propagation. Applicants are expected to hold a Ph.D. and/or M.D. and have a proven record of high quality publications in the field of Influenza infection and/or lung physiology. Strong interest in contributing to multidisciplinary teams (engineers, biologists/physiologists, clinicians) is critical for this position. Expertise in influenza work or in vitro culture and characterization of cells derived from the lung (small airway/alveolus), as well as knowledge of flow cytometry, basic molecular and cell biology concepts and techniques is a must. Previous work with microfluidics is an advantage.

The ideal candidate would bring expertise in influenza and lung biology, function, and disease, with an interest in applying this expertise in combination with modern bioengineering practices. This postdoctoral fellow is expected to develop and lead an interdisciplinary research project aimed at creating microengineered “organ-on-chip” models, simulating human diseases and exploring their use in drug discovery applications.

Applications, assembled as single PDF files, should contain a complete resume, cover letter describing research interests and goals, full list of publications, copies of up to three relevant scientific papers, as well as the names and contact information of three references (expected to provide letters of recommendation). Applications should be sent to faculty_postdocs@wyss.harvard.edu using the subject line “INFLUENZA APPLICATION.”

Harvard University is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action employer and applications from women and minority candidates are strongly encouraged.
