The Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering at Harvard University invites applications for a postdoctoral fellow position in the Systems Discovery platform. The mission of the Wyss Institute is to discover the engineering principles that Nature uses to build living things; to pursue the high-risk research that is fundamental to advance this effort; and to harness these insights to create biologically-inspired materials and devices to advance human health and improve the environment – thereby revolutionizing clinical medicine and creating a more sustainable world.
We seek outstanding postdoctoral applicants with expertise in machine learning to join a team of computational and systems biologists working on the discovery of novel synthetic gene circuits, predict their behavior, and propose modifications to existing gene circuitries to perform defined functions.
Applicants are expected to hold a Ph.D. in statistics, computer science, mathematics, physics, engineering, bioinformatics, computational biology, or related field of study, and have a proven record of high quality publications in the fields of systems biology, machine learning, or bioinformatics. This individual will bring in tools and concepts from machine learning into the discovery of novel synthetic gene circuits, predict their behavior, and propose modifications to existing gene circuitries to perform defined functions. S/he will be familiar with deep learning, artificial intelligence, latent space modeling, Bayesian modeling, as well as more traditional machine learning techniques, while showcasing an innate creativity and ability to consistently think outside of the box. A solid understanding of ordinary differential equation modeling is a plus and expertise in MATLAB and/or R, Python or other scripting language is a must. Applications, assembled as single PDF files, should contain a complete resume, cover letter describing research interests and goals, full list of publications, copies of up to three relevant scientific papers, as well as the names and contact information of three references (expected to provide letters of recommendation). Applications should be sent to email@example.com using the subject line “SYSTEMS DISCOVERY POSTDOCTORAL FELLOW APPLICATION.”
Harvard University is an equal opportunity employer and all qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, national origin, disability status, protected veteran status, gender identity, sexual orientation, pregnancy and pregnancy-related conditions, or any other characteristic protected by law.
