Tom studies synthetic DNA systems that interface with biology. He recently invented a mechanism for sensing and recording nanoscale biochemical interactions with single-molecule precision, and is further developing it under the Wyss Molecular Robotics Initiative. Prior to joining the Wyss staff, he completed post-doctoral research in the Department of Systems Biology at Harvard Medical School. Tom earned his M.D. and Ph.D. degrees from Northwestern University, studying the biophysics of cell motility. He also holds B.S. and M.S. degrees in mechanical engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana/Champaign, and has practiced engineering in industry and academia.
