The healthy vaginal microbiome is Lactobacillus dominant and a shift in the vaginal microbiome from Lactobacillus dominant state to a more diverse microbiome is a significant health concern for women which pre-disposes women to other life-threatening diseases such as cervical cancer and sexually transmitted diseases. It may even cause infertility in women of reproductive age and pre-term birth in pregnant women. Many women are susceptible to recurrent vaginal dysbiosis and repetitive use of antibiotics makes them resistant to such treatments.
Our previous results show that Lactobacillus reduces inflammation caused by vaginal dysbiosis in the Vagina-Chip model. Hence, aiming to alleviate symptoms associated with recurrent vaginal dysbiosis, we are working towards developing novel treatments.
