Hosted by Wyss Core Faculty David R. Walt, PhD, Diagnostics Grand Rounds brings clinicians with unmet needs to the Wyss Institute. The goal of these sessions is to inform technology developers about important clinical problems that can help them direct their technology development efforts. Presenters are asked to identify diagnostic needs that will have an impact on the quality of care they deliver.
Biomarker development in the pregnancy and women’s health space proceeds in a fashion that is fundamentally different from the canonical model built around oncologic or cardiologic-based needs. Dr McElrath, with experience in both high-risk pregnancy management and biomarker development, will discuss the need for a biomarker for preeclampsia – a condition that affects up to 7% of all pregnancies in the US – and the strategy his group has undertaken to bring this test to clinical utility. In so doing, he will discuss how development in this space is specific and unique.
