(BOSTON) — Clarivate has announced its Highly Cited Researchers™ 2022 list, which uses both quantitative and qualitative analysis to identify individuals from across the globe who have demonstrated significant and broad influence in their chosen field(s) of research. Each year’s list recognizes the authors of scientific papers that rank in the top 1% by citations in the Web of Science™ citation index over the past decade.

14 Wyss faculty members (the highest number yet) across five fields are honored in this year’s list, and one has made the remarkable achievement of being named in multiple categories.

A total of 6,938 individuals are recognized this year, 233 of whom are affiliated with Harvard University, making it once again the institution with the highest concentration of Highly Cited Researchers in the world. This year Clarivate also partnered with Retraction Watch to extend its qualitative analysis and address increasing concerns over potential misconduct (such as plagiarism, image manipulation, fake peer review).

“The fact that the number of Wyss faculty on the Highly Cited Researchers list is increasing every year demonstrates our continued commitment to academic excellence and pushing the boundaries of interdisciplinary science,” said Ingber, who is also the Judah Folkman Professor of Vascular Biology at Harvard Medical School and Boston Children’s Hospital, and the Hansjörg Wyss Professor of Bioinspired Engineering at Harvard’s John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences.

Since 2014 Clarivate Analytics, which maintains the Web of Science™ index, has been pinpointing individual researchers with outsized influence in their fields based on the frequency with which their work is cited in the scientific literature. Tracing publication citations can help reveal which ones impact a given field most.

David Pendlebury, Head of Research Analysis at the Institute for Scientific Information at Clarivate, said, “Research fuels the race for knowledge and it is important that nations and institutions celebrate the individuals who drive the wheel of innovation. The Highly Cited Researchers list identifies and celebrates exceptional individual researchers who are having a significant impact on the research community as evidenced by the rate at which their work is being cited by their peers. These individuals are helping to transform human ingenuity into our world’s greatest breakthroughs – and it is an honor to celebrate their achievements.”
